I propose that a single control be added to allow the user to unlock the cursor from the center of the screen during play. This would allow a more stable and quick building experience which may reduce motion sickness and result in a more pleasing viewing experience for the player and for potential audiences.
When holding the "Unlock Cursor" key, the cursor would no longer turn the player view, but cause the reticle to leave the center of the screen and move freely. This would allow the placing of blocks anywhere on the screen instead of only in the center. I suggest that the control to "Unlock Cursor" be bound automatically to "Alt" and, by default, only be active when its key is held. It may be possible that this control could technically be viewed as a parity of Minecraft Pocket Edition's ability to place and mine blocks anywhere on the screen.
Block placement would still be based on the player's location and their camera angle, but tight spots, that can be rather difficult to reach when building, would be more accessible. This would also allow players to place blocks beneath the block they stand on -- which, in this evolving game, would most likely be a welcome ability by most players.
Examples of this can be found in the following games -- included to help in understanding this control:
- Portal Knights: The most applicable example I found, as a voxel building game. It calls this ability "Temporary Cursor"
- Powerwash Simulator: A more recent example which calls it "Aim Mode"
