If you fall past a certain point, you end up in the Nether. This could explain a lot about the void, and how official sources say the nether is below the overworld. As you are falling, the overworld stops loading and the Nether starts loading. You still take damage during this time. Once it is done, it will appear below you as if you were falling the whole time. Then you will land on top. You will take large amounts of fall damage. Basically, this is to help creative players get to the Nether without having to build a portal. You just mine straight down and "voíla''! You are now on top. There is no way survival players can survive this, and if they could, they would have to be ridiculously well-prepared, and at that point it wouldn't even matter, they should have enough obsidian and ender pearls to get to the Nether roof. This would add some interesting worldbuilding, as well as a quick way to get to the Nether in creative.
