Block-breaking is essential to Minecraft, and as such, should also be one of the parts that actually make sense.
The way it's currently set up is.. unfortunate, for a lack of better words.
It's great that blocks have variation in the amount of time it takes to break them, depending on their type. However, the part that doesn't make sense is that slabs take longer to mine than their full-block or stair-block counterparts.
Let's take Stone Bricks for example. It's relatively fast to mine. In this case, it can also be insta-mined. The Stone Brick Stairs have the same hardness and can be insta-mined as well. However, the Stone Brick Slabs are harder, and can no longer be insta-mined.
This breaks continuity, it breaks immersion, and it breaks logic.
I propose that block hardness gets updated for all blocks to be consistent. It shouldn't take longer to mine slabs than their full-block counterparts.
Ideally, slabs should be faster to mine than their full-block and stair-block counterparts, but making them equally fast to mine would also be okay. As long as it's consistent and logical.
