In real life, dowsing rods are a method of divining the location of buried metals, underground bodies of water and sometimes ghosts. This concept mostly deals with the first two. A dowsing rod would be a usable item crafted with copper ingots along the top row, an amethyst shard on the left and another copper ingot at the bottom left. The recipe could also be reversed, like axes.

It has low durability, but could be enchanted with unbreaking and mending. In hand, it appears as a 3d model with a long horizontal rod attached to a short handle. When used, the rod spins around before settling limply back in the regular holding position.
In the upcoming Archeology system, some blocks contain items within that can be uncovered with a brush. Assume these items are contained within the block data. If the rod is used near (~2 blocks horizontally and ~3 blocks vertically below) a block that contains an item, the dowsing rod points straight when used. Additionally, if the player has a rod in their main-hand and off-hand, the search is more precise, only detecting if a block with an item is up to 3 blocks below. This could add strategy to uncovering archaeological sites.
But thats not all! If a dowsing rod is used in a slime chunk, regardless of nearby blocks, it always points straight. This would eliminate the need for 3rd party slime finders.
