I would love to see archaeology expanded in a future Minecraft update. The current archaeology system is a great start, but there is huge potential to make discovering the past a much bigger part of exploration.
I would like to see many more archaeological artifacts, such as ancient coins, figurines, tools, weapons, jewelry, beads, seals, statues and different types of pottery.
There could also be many more archaeological structures buried underground: prehistoric settlements, tells (archaeological mounds), tombs, burial sites, ancient houses, temples, workshops and entire buried villages. Some sites could contain multiple layers, with older settlements deeper underground.
It would also be amazing to discover much larger sites, such as enormous buried ancient cities, Roman-style ruins, roads, aqueducts, forums, temples and other large historical structures.
Different sites could contain different types of artifacts depending on their purpose. A tomb could contain jewelry and ceremonial objects, while a settlement could contain household tools and pottery.
Archaeology should feel like discovering a forgotten part of Minecraft's history, not simply finding random loot. Finding a small artifact should sometimes lead the player to a much larger buried site.
Minecraft is already a game about exploration and discovery. Expanding archaeology could create an entirely new way to explore the world and uncover its history.
