Although it's a simple idea, I believe that the addition of the "Block of Charcoal" would continue to push Minecraft in the direction it seems to be wanting to go: continuity.
Looking back at Caves & Cliffs, iron and gold were changed to produce a droppable item to be turned into a block, granting us players more convenience whilst caving. This same concept would be applied to charcoal: if we were to create a tree farm and stock on charcoal for caving, we are required to hold on to stack after stack; the block would alleviate this inventory clog and perhaps encourage to consider it as viable fuel.
Not only would the "Block of Charcoal" give the game more continuity, but it would also be a chance to add another dark block with an interesting texture. I imagine it being much like the "Block of Coal" but with some hues of brown and speckles of yellow and orange, reflecting charcoal's item texture and it's more "hard-earned" expression.
I understand fully that charcoal (as an item in general) is outweighed by other fuel sources (including coal itself), often not worth gathering when coal is readily available, and is generally forgotten as an item overall - but I think addressing some of Minecraft's "lesser-cared-for" items would provide a more humble approach; we don't always need *new* things, sometimes old will do, too.
Although it may be pointless, it would not only help with inventory management but also provide builders another block to play with.
Have a fantastic day all!
