In Minecraft, minecarts have been outclassed by other forms of transportation for as long as sprinting has been a part of the game. They have a max speed of 8 blocks per second, which is only slightly faster than Sprint-Jumping. The speed can't be flat-out increased, as it will break any creations made by the community. However, better alternatives can be added. My proposal is to add new kinds of rails with different max-speeds depending on the material they are made of.
Here is how that would work.
1: All rails of all types in existing worlds are now made out of copper, and look like it as well. All of these rails will retain their max-speed of 8 blocks per second.
2: Add new rails for Iron, Gold, and Netherite, each with increased max speeds.
Netherite rails would be expensive, but would allow minecarts to reach speeds substantially faster than Elytra and Ice-Boat transport. Gold would be equivalent to Ice-Boat tracks. The speed of a rail would be kept as block-tags. i.e. #slow_rail, #fast_rail etc.
This update would allow minecarts to have increased speed and functionality without breaking any existing features in a neutral way.
[Extra Idea]
Similarly to how Elytra use Firework Rockets to move faster, a player in a minecart would be able to use them while looking at a minecart to accelerate faster. This would not be able to keep them above the max speed, however.
I hope that this idea is taken into consideration, as I believe it to be a great idea for a future drop.
