Right, but how would you get lava/obsidian in a superflat world with no structures?

If you use a lighting rod and a pig is struck (in the overworld), the pig will turn into a zombified piglin, which can not be bartered with.

or maybe you could have pigs struck by lightning become piglin and not zombie piglin, giving you a few moments to barter with them, to get obsidian, to go to the nether

I thought about that, and that won't happen in the over-world. Pig struck by lightning in the over-world automatically turn into zombified piglin (no trading). If you sneak a piglin into the over-world he will only have fifteen seconds before turning zombified, which you can barter in those fifteen seconds, But you still don't have access to the nether in the first place without lava or obsidian to sneak them in.

I also play Minecraft Superflat survival with no structures; and I’m here to advocate that the lack of many resources is part of the fun. Access to the Nether or End would quickly complicate what could be done in the superflat, with loads of unnecessary new decorations. In addition, this would make the acquisition of iron and light sources easier. While I can see why my peers would want this, and it is obvious to me that, per the above system, obsidian would be off-limits before villager acquisition, the crux of of issue that I see is superflat becoming too similar to normal survival.

or make villagers trade obsidian (maybe their last trade or something)
