With the upcoming introduction of hay beds, I think beds could use a rework, because let's be honest:
No one is going to use hay beds with their current premise. They're supposed to cost 3 hay bales, which is expensive, and even if that recipe changes, they're still costly to maintain since they are consumed on use. To make them worth using, I think both bed types should be adjusted.
First, normal beds should be harder to use. The radius in which monsters prevent sleeping should be increased to around 32 blocks. This would encourage players to build safer bases and place beds in protected locations. I also think that if a hostile mob enters a 16-block radius around the bed while you're sleeping, you should wake up. In addition, using a bed in an unsafe area should have consequences similar to older versions. Even if players eventually learn how to bypass the safety requirements, it would still encourage sleeping in secure locations. Beds could also require a copper ingot in the center slot beneath the wool, replacing the middle plank, making them slightly more expensive and sturdier.
As for hay beds, they should allow sleeping almost anywhere, ignoring monsters unless they are within 8 blocks and can pathfind to you. They should also prevent penalties from sleeping in unsafe areas and, as intended, not reset your spawn point. Their recipe should be changed to 2 wheat and 1 wool. This would make hay beds a useful early-game alternative while retaining niche uses later on.
