I think Unbreaking could be expanded with two additional levels: Unbreaking IV and Unbreaking V, which would be rare endgame enchantments obtainable only in The End.
Instead of making tools and armor fully unbreakable, these higher levels would introduce a “false break” mechanic. When an item reaches zero durability, it would not be destroyed. Instead, it would become unusable and remain in the player’s inventory until repaired. This keeps the item safe while still preserving survival balance.
To maintain progression and cost, these items would require repair in an anvil using the material they are made from (for example, diamond gear uses diamonds, netherite gear uses netherite ingots, etc.). This ensures that powerful equipment still has a meaningful resource cost and cannot be maintained for free.
As a balance rule, Unbreaking IV and V would not be compatible with Mending, preventing completely maintenance-free gear and keeping both enchantments relevant in different playstyles.
This system could fit into Minecraft’s existing progression and could be tied to the Ancient Builders lore, who may have developed stronger enchantments in The End due to limited resources and harsh conditions.
Overall, this would make Unbreaking feel more meaningful at high levels while adding a late-game reward for players who fully explore The End.
