Buffer Biomes would simply be transitionary biomes. This can apply to land biomes, like sand spilling into other biomes, but I want to speak about river biomes.
Sometimes swamps spawn next to oceans, in which case a lush marsh should separate the swamp and ocean. The marsh would filter the salt waters keeping the salinity stable.
For simple Rivers they can end in Rover Deltas, sometimes. It would be a flatish land with small islands dotting the waterscape, until it becomes ocean. More than once I have found cliffs dipping straight to the ocean. These beautiful cliffs could house a small water fall. This would be a short river spilling over the cliff into the ocean. These are small touches but could be very rewarding to the eye.
