Minecraft Java and Bedrock could improve their skin system by allowing higher-resolution skins. Currently, in the Java Edition the standard limit is 64x64 skins, while Bedrock already supports both 64x64 and 128x128. Even so, both versions are still quite limited considering the capabilities of modern devices.
It would be interesting if both versions allowed skins with higher resolutions, such as 256x256 or even more, enabling much greater detail, realism, and customization possibilities. This would make room for smoother shading, more complex textures, and even more advanced visual effects.
Another improvement would be an automatic optimization option, where lower-end devices load a reduced version of the skin to avoid performance issues. Meanwhile, more powerful devices—such as modern smartphones or gaming PCs—could display the full high-resolution skins without problems.
Additionally, adding more customizable layers (beyond the current second layer) would give players more freedom to create clothing, accessories, and more advanced 3D-like effects directly on the skin, without relying on mods or addons.
Overall, expanding the skin resolution limit would make the game feel more modern, creative, and aligned with current hardware capabilities, significantly improving the visual experience and player identity.
