Currently when using fences and walls for small scale details on a build, they can frequently attach to blocks that shouldn't be attached. Currently the options are to build around this limitation, which greatly reduces the available blocks, or to try and ignore it, which often looks worse. This also becomes an issue when using stacked walls for a thin wall. Any decor next to it creates a thick segment of wall that looks out of place.
The best option I've seen would be to use something like how hoppers work. Only blocks placed on the fence get connected. This would still allow connected blocks, but provide an easy alternative. Or it could work like chests, and not connect while crouching.
There are some edge cases with this, such as if this would apply when placing fence, or two different fences. In both these cases the most logic option is to auto connect them, as placing on the small end of the fence hitbox for long stretches would be frustrating. Although being able to make pillars of fences that don't connect could be nice. The other thing is if moving blocks with a piston should connect. I believe they should, as without that it removes potential redstone mechanics, and there are very limited scenarios where it impacts asthetics.
This would be a good quality of life update to allow fences and walls to be more versitile and used in more limited spaces where connections are undesireable, while fitting current mechanics and gameplay. Much like chests.
