There are a lot of good ideas for snow biomes. However, I don't feel like they get to the root of the issue. Snow biomes lack aesthetic value and overall uniqueness. Step one is identifying the flaws that snow biomes have.
- First - Snow biomes are empty and lack uniqueness when compared to other biomes
- Second - Snow biomes don't present any interesting gameplay
- Third - Snow biomes lack visual flare
The first issue can be solved in multiple ways, with the idea of the introduction of new mobs indigenous to these climates being one of them. A new pine tree could also be added. But, this doesn't solve the underlying issue, so on that level, I feel that a more adventurous approach should be taken. For one, snow should slow movement like soul sand/soil but at a lower level (Negatable by leather boots and could also depend upon the number of snow layers). Snow should become a more versatile building block. Snowlogging should also be introduced. In general, more uses for snow.
The second issue gameplay can be solved with the first issue by adding more interactive elements and reasons to go to snow biomes. Other people already have threads with these ideas that could easily come into play here.
The third issue can be partially solved with the other two, but the best solution from my perspective is more dynamic snow layers (snow layers are offset from each other). Snow on grass goes further down. Fog effects during certain weather conditions. And so on.
