Trees could generate with thinner branches called trunks or stems, tree trunks being about the thickness of a wall block and the stem being about as thick as a fence block. "Leaf-logged" versions would exist to prevent weird gaps in the leaves. *this idea comes from "some trees can generate thinner" idea.
The trunk and stem blocks would connect in a similar way to chorus fruit, where they can branch in multiple directions, connecting as you place more blocks next to them like fences and walls.
They would also naturally degrade the same as leaf blocks so that taller trees can still be mined/harvested without pillaring up.
When mined the trunk and stem blocks would drop exactly as they are, making them useful for decorating or building as they have the wood bark texture, but they are thinner than a full block.
All trees would naturally generate with branches made from these blocks, and all trees in general would be made taller.
A few trees would generate as only shorter trunk or stem blocks to add some variety to the ages of trees, as the thinner shorter trees would look like they hadn't fully grown.
Saplings could also randomly grow into the shorter trees every once in a while, however if the players prefers a full sized tree using bone meal on a short thin tree could make it grow to full sized.
A trunk block with the thickness of a wall could be crafted into planks, but would only yield 2 instead of 4, and the stems would only yield 1 plank.
