    While the options would be nice, I'm not sure the rationale that it "feels bad" is logical, now if the game had some CO2 tracking/consequence, sure as that then is mechanically logical and necessary. Now in terms of alternative energy in the game, lava buckets are an option already, but I think some sort of redstone engine could be a cool mechanic in line with the other game blocks. Maybe a special structure using redstone and copper could power furnaces so it's advantage would be a continuous power it's downside a bulky setup.

    This is a game. There is no affect on this virtual environment when smelting your iron. I'd understand if this was really but this is Minecraft and I don't understand why you feel this way. However, I am interested in knowing what ideas you have for making a vanilla style renewable energy source in Minecraft. You did mention a few ideas and although this is an example I don't suppose we could incorporate nuclear power or wind turbines and keep it vanilla.
