Maps that show underground terrain

Traditional maps all show the highest placed block in the world, which people use for a variety of reasons from just exploring, to map walls for their base, or map art.

With the new Caves and Cliffs update likely to push more people underground for building amazing bases, a new map that can show what one has built underground would be awesome, or could be used for exploring the spaghetti caves to keep track of where one has been or how to get out would be equally as useful.

This could be a new map type, made at the cartography table. Exact implementation could go a couple of different ways... it could just look down until it goes through the first column of blocks until it hits air... or it could have a selectable Y level... testing would need to be done to see which would be most effective... or it could display based on what your Y level is, and then be locked in place with glass.

    I love all three implementations, though I think your last one would be most "venilla". Having to go to the y level you want to map to be as well as the x, z, coords would mean the function of the map wouldn't be to different from what it is now. The use of a cartography table could simply be the ability to unlock the Y levels.

    This would be one of the most awesome additions that they could add to caves and cliffs with maps it’s easy to get around and learn the area of the wild but there’s no real good way to find your way around the caves just because there’s no mapping system. Personal I love exploring caves in real life and in the game but navigating caves in the game is extremely hard and I’m always getting lost which is frustrating. So a mapping system would be awesome.
