Bad Portal Placement

I fixed up a portal, went through and the portal was standing on its own with two blocks on either side. A gas attacked it (and me!!!) which caused the portal to close and me to fall off into the lava with my BEST ENCHANTED BOW and my BEST ENCHANTED FISHING ROD. I would’ve survived had the portal been placed on enough blocks instead of being spawned mid air on 6 blocks.
