as of the cave update's current snapshots, the devs have implemented quite a few ways to add strategy to mining, but what if deep cave mining was more challenging?, after all, deeper caves should be more challenging in order to separate them from normal caves. that is where sludge comes in.
sludge could be a murky, liquid growth of violet and black color, which generates over ore veins, spreading on any Deepslate and Ores next to It, although It can be Overridden by sculk (meaning sculk growths can be used to remove it). It cannot be mined or be mined through normally (requiring players to mine a different side of the block If it's on one side), but can be picked up with buckets, encouraging players to at least bring a few of them when going deeper underground. However, Sludge can AND will constantly overtake blocks, from walls to ceilings to floors, meaning the player must get to mining as fast as possible. while not being able to stack naturally, sludge can be stacked from a tile-stage to a slab (unless If sideways), before even becoming a full block, which can be used to fully negate fall damage. If there's at least a 4x4 floor of sludge present, Ooze can spawn, which is a slime-like mob that has 5-15 HP (depending on it's size) that is hostile, and will inflict blindness if it hits you.
by adding a new layer of mining to Minecraft, players will be encouraged to go to the caves closer to the surface first to prepare for the more challenging mining expeditions below.
