When it comes down to blocks that have been added in the cave update, it's rather small in comparison to what we had during the Nether update, even when counting the fungi planks and Blackstone compared to Deepslate, which has the most renditions. adding ash could be very interesting for minecraft's caves and cliffs part 2, and may even be both realistic AND useful.
the Ash clump could be a new block, formed by lava touching gravel or sand, or could be crafted with 9 ash if you set a few trees on fire, in which Tree bark can drop 1-2 ashes prior to being Ignited. the block itself is highly dangerous while touching lava, setting players on fire if they stand on it.1-4 ash may drop from the clumps themselves unless mined with a shovel (the tool of choice) with fortune 3.
ash can be used to put out fireplaces, but the most notable use for it would be shingles, a new stair block crafted with ash and wood plank that can be used to decorate houses and be dyed with any color, making it useful for more modern builds.
by adding ash, and thus adding shingles, The game's building scene could be expanded upon, not to mention the conversion of certain blocks would be a realistic and unique process in comparison to just finding it out of the blue like ores and Deepslate.
