Right now, we can only add bonuses at our gear via enchanting, but in reality, the armors and weapons could be reinforced by mixing or adding different materials. This should be made also into minecraft, to diversify more the gameplay and bring a new use to the Smithing Table.
Forging
If we add an ingot/gem to an armor/tool, it will be reforged: this means that the armor/tool will change a bit its texture, but will also have some special bonuses, which will be different and independent from enchantments. But, we would have a limit to how many reforges we can do on an item, like 3 or 5 times per item. To scrap the reforging, we will use a grindstone, but we will lose the material used for reforging.
Bonuses
Each material will grant different bonuses: Gold and Lapis can increase enchanting values; Iron and Diamond might add a bit more durability (Not Unbreaking enchantment); Netherite might add more damage/defense; Copper increase efficency/thoughness; Quartz, Emeralds and other may add unique bonuses.
However, we can't add Iron to Iron gear, or Netherite to Netherite, and this to all materials.
Also, if fill all the decorations slots on a tool/armor, we might have a special bonus, and the tool/armor may have an adjective near it, like Netherite Axe might become Gilded Netherite Axe, or Golden Helmet become Reinforced Golden Helmet.
This would bring more diversity to the gameplay, and also more strategy, mainly I pvp
