With the lower height limit now adjusted, it would be possible to generate oceans that are actually oceans, as opposed to shallow seas. This Abyssal Plane biome (named after the deep places of Earth's ocean) would bottom out below level 0 and be for the most part barren (as it is in real life). The floor would probably just be 1 layer of gravel or clay, with stone/deepslate generating normally below that.
The Abyssal Plane would not generate structures aside from Ocean Monuments and shipwrecks both at about Monument rarity. Monuments generated here would have adjusted height. Geothermal vents could also generate sometimes (as a structure or micro-biome).
The unique thing about the Abyssal Plane would be the pressure of the depths. This could be expressed in one of several ways I have outlined below.
- Slower movement. Movement speed and look sensitivity would be reduced to 70-50% of normal. Attack cooldown and block breaking speed would also be changed by the same factor.
- Diving damage. Diving into the depths or swimming up too fast would cause damage based on distance and speed.
- Difficulty breathing. Air would deplete more rapidly and recover more slowly. Perhaps air could even deplete (very slowly) while under the waterbreathing effect. This would necessitate a second level of waterbreathing.
- Crushing pressure. Items would take slight damage over time. Blocks below a certain hardness would crack and eventually break.
