Raw ore was introduced to the game so that the Looting enchantment would work on those minerals, it was also added so your stacks of ores saves space when you craft them into a blocks. in short, they were added to increase the amount of ore you gained.
so why would you have to go through the process of uncrafting the raw ore blocks into raw ore pieces just to smelt them into ingots and then possibly crafting them back into blocks again for storing?
i suggest that the blocks of raw ore become smeltable so we can save on time and space when smelting. also, one block of raw ore should cost 1 piece of coal. let me explain why, one piece of coal can smelt 8 items in total and a block of raw ore is 9 pieces, balancing it out decently well.
so to summarize, by doing this we:
- can smelt more ores at the same time with less space needed.
- if we have a lot of ore, we won't have to go through the process of manually uncrafting the raw ore blocks just to craft the ingot into blocks again afterwards, saving time.
- we save on fuel resources allowing us to smelt more for less.
