Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

A separate block could work, I have seen other suggestions to take this sort of block and tie it to enchanting. That way building up the enchanting table is based on filling the shelves with enchanted books (the level giving back to enchanting), which I do like mechanically as it would even make junk/cursed books useful. I have seen a Mod/data pack that does bookshelves aesthetically as you describe, and it does look good, so it is doable for sure.  To be consistent this new block would probably need just 6 planks, 2 rows of 3 with a space in between. Making it a cheaper option, and with storage of a barrel would be epic, with the exclusive of holding: maps, compass and timer, books, signed books, paper, enchanted books, and lapis, which just represents what would show up randomly on the texture in stacks as the shelves filled. Only enchanted books would count towards an enchanting effect, but the others could make it easier for builders to quickly fill as desired for looks.

If current bookshelves would be modified so that you can put books in them and take books out of them, maybe get a redstone signal out, then bookshelves would become cheaper to make.

You would only need to make a empty bookshelf and you can fill it up later we you have the resources.

Maybe enchanting could be effected by the number of books inside.
