Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

I think the basket should be crafted using straw :)

Yes, Minecraft needs more stone age tech, and this is a really nice early game storage upgrade that fits nicely between the chest/barrel, the bundle and the shulker chest.

I think the basket should have a normal 3x9 inventory grid just like the chest and barrel. A basket having that much space (as opposed to your proposed 2 stacks) isn't really a stretch from a barrel (or the player's pockets, for that matter) having that much space. Implied by that is that it should use the same inventory UI as the chest or barrel. I think adding yet another way to access an inventory, different from the chest, bundle, and now chestboat, is not the best idea. Most blocks with an inventory use the same UI for a reason.

However, I think it should have some UI-less ways of using it:

It should automatically pick up the aforementioned produce items. Those are the things that, in the survival early game, tend to be the things that most clog up the inventory. They get picked up more often than they get used, so making it so that accessing your produce items is a little more complicated, but picking them up is a lot easier, seems like a good tradeoff to me.

I think baskets should be craftable out of many different materials (but only one material at a time), and come in visually distinct variants: Straw baskets, stick baskets, bamboo baskets, vine baskets, possibly even twisting and weeping vine variants, perhaps even a glowberry vine variant that acts as a light source when placed.

The basket should also show visually how full it is, with different levels like the cauldron or composter, but unlike these, the top texture should be different depending on content, I think one texture each for the most common produce items, plus one for 'miscallaneous' is feasible. Either based on what the most common item in the basket is, or designating the top left inventory slot. This would aleviate the need for item frames for at least some kinds of items, and add a nice design option for storage areas.

Baskets should also be able to be placed on Llamas, donkeys and mules, as alternative to chests, and have a different texture. (Likewise barrels and shulker chests)

Baskets should also be usable as pet carriers. Put a blanket (carpet) in a basket, and you get a pet basket. You can place a pet basket in the world (ideally it should have a different texture, with the opening to the side instead of up, and the blanket visible.) Small friendly or neutral animals, like of course cats and dogs, but also rabbits, chicken, and the babies of the other farm animals, should be able to get in and out of the pet basket. Putting an animal's favourite food in the basket should attract that animal. The player should be able to pick up pet baskets with the animal inside, making transporting animals a lot less painful. But Pet baskets with an animal inside should not be able to be placed in other containers, only in the player inventory.

clarification on "It should automatically pick up [...] produce items":
I don't mean like a hopper, when it's placed as a block, but that the basket should automatically pick up produce items when you use it as a tool in your hand to harvest crops, but in order to access its contents you have to place it as a block. When placed, it should of course interact with hoppers.

This could have the added benefit of avoiding having to render all the harvested crops as dropped items when you harvest them this way, potentially improving performance
