You should be able to place water logged hanging roots under farmland to make the farmland above the hanging roots hydrated. The farmland with the roots below should then hydrate neighboring blocks as if it were a block of water. So a farmland block with hanging roots below it would hydrate all farmland blocks that are 1-4 horizontal blocks away from it. This mechanic would be useful in that it would allow for players to irrigate their farmland without visible water blocks, and it would also be educational on how roots work with plants, as one of their main functions is to draw water from the soil.
