iron rusting would be cool, but potentially worrying, however, it would be much slower than copper, oxidizing once every 100-300 Minecraft days, with one more stage than copper. This means that copper will fully oxidize in 240 days on average, while iron will rust in 1000 days on average, the shortest being 500 and the longest being 1500. iron would rust at the same rate as copper when exposed to water, drip particles, or rain.

Maybe the first rusted copper stage (old iron) would be rid of those bothersome borders, (makes it more fun to build with) making iron a smoother block to build with, the second would start the actual rusting.

Iron can also be waxed using honeycomb.

I'm not sure about iron rusting on its own, that kind of takes away copper's unique mechanic. Rusted iron would be a cool texture though. Maybe it could be rusted using dragon's breath?

Maybe it could only be done by direct contact with water in a warm sea biome or with the use of bottles of water, and it would be nice to also be able to slow down the oxidation reaction of the copper block by placing an iron block beside it (because irl iron is more reactive than copper, and the iron would act as a sacrificial metal).
