It has been hotly debated within the Minecraft community for a while on how best to go about early-to-mid-game inventory expansion. The most commonly-suggested feature is backpacks. However, the role that a backpack would fill - A storage space that stores items within your inventory - already exists, in the form of shulker boxes.
And so, I propose my solution to this issue; Bags.
Bags are inventory-expanding items, which are crafted in 3 tiers (elaborated upon later), which directly expand a player's inventory capacity. They are worn, either in the chest slot or in a new spot, which I imagine to be around where the offhand slot is located in the inventory. Wearing one increases the amount of inventory slots you have available. These inventory slots, while visually separate from your base inventory, work identically to your base inventory slots - you are able to freely transfer items into and from them.
The bag does not store items, and removing one which you have equipped simply transfers the items into your inventory... or onto the floor, if you don't have room.
The way I imagine them, they would be able to be crafted in 3 tiers - The Pouch, Bag, and Pack, which give you 3, 6, and 12 extra inventory slots respectively. The pack might be crafted using 2 pouches and a bag, encouraging players to craft all 3.
If you are confused about this concept, or I have not explained it well, I would be happy to provide a visual mockup for how it might look and function.
