In general, I would love to see more elytra enchantments. Not so that the elytra approaches overpowerdness, or is able to replicate the defensive power of a chestplate. Just some enchantments that make it seem like more of a journey to level up than the ol' Spend-Two-Emeralds-and-Slap-on-Unbreaking-III-and-Mending process that currently exists. Maybe some enchantments that aren't combinable with others to make enchanting less linear for the elytra.
Anyways. The enchantment in mind right now is called Mercy. When your elytra breaks, and you enter free-fall, Mercy gives the Elytra one last parachute-like poof the lessen ground damage. This does not negate all fall damage. Think of it as hitting an invisible block mid-air, resetting your vertical velocity.
Different levels of enchantment could make Mercy activate at better times, say, within a certain proximity to the ground, or when you've fallen past the lethal dosage of fall damage. I don't think it should be manually-activated, however, it's probably also difficult to code as an automated thing with so much terrain variation.
But yeah. In conclusion, Mercy is intended to lessen but not eliminate fall damage when your elytra breaks mid-flight. It's simple in concept, balanced, but good enough to make you thankful you have it when you plummet from the heights while far away from home. Please consider, Mojang!
