Overhauling food to make it harder to survive.
Once you get a cow farm, you never have to worry about food again and you end up with chests full of fish, potatoes, etc that you're NEVER going to use in a million years. I thought it was survival mode? You can just jump into a hole with your chests of food and survive for the rest of time. I propose that food rots and spoils. This would force you to jump outta that hole and hunt "How does that work with stacks of food?" Food doesn't stack anymore. However, you won't need to eat as often anymore. "I'll just keep my 1000 cows in a hole alive & will kill them when I need food." Well actually you have to feed animals born from breeding (wild cows eat grass) or else they die. They could have life indicators like wolves, this has a side benefit of fixing a too high of a mob count and low TPS on servers. This makes food a commodity not just ores. "I'll just have a massive wheat field and eat bread." Well actually wheat takes about e.g. 30 in game days to grow. Also now you can get sick of 1 type of food too. This will require you to be eating a variety of food. Maybe you're going to have to kill an animal a day to survive, aka you actually have to work to survive now. Also most meat spoils after ~3 in game days like irl. But you only need to eat around 4 times a day, which could include eating stews that you make with carrots & potatoes etc to get better saturation from your vegetables so maybe youd only eat 1 time that day. Yes there can be food preservation methods for balance.
