Based on what i've observed chainmails are rare and uncraftable, gives almost the same defense as golden armor and sometimes used as a design or to just to show off.
why not make it useful and craftable?, most players don't really use it because of it's rarity, how about giving it some purpose?
how about be able to combine it with armors?,
but with positive and negative effect?
for example, a % chance of absorbing damage, the lower the quality of armor the lower % chance of absorbing damage.
Chainmail leather armor > chainmail netherite armor, starting from leather with low chance to netherite with high chance of damage absorption.
But how do you know if your chainmail leather to netherite armor is absorbing damage?, well it will have 2 durability guage, one for the chainmail and one for the armor, so when ever it absorbs incoming damages the chainmail gets the most damage which reduces its durability the most (the armor will work as the same but if the player gets hit, the chainmail is the one will absorb it instead of the player).
Some says "it would be op! 😭", nah your wrong of course there's a negative effects.
for instance:
(-% of attack speed) - slow hit
(-% of movement speed) - slower movements (even in the water)
well it depends what will the devs do.
lastly, if the chainmail is not combined to any armor, it can be enchanted but you're not be able to combine it with armor, you need a normal chainmail to combine it with armor.
