Dear Mojang Team,
As a long-time Minecraft player and modding community member, I would like to express my concern about the upcoming change in the version numbering system planned for 2026.
Switching from the traditional 1.x.x format to a year-based format such as 26.1 may cause confusion among players, especially those unfamiliar with the reasoning behind the change. Many players might think that several major updates (e.g., from 1.21 to 26.1) have been skipped, leading to misunderstandings about what content they may have missed.
Moreover, this change could unintentionally complicate things for mod developers, map creators, and server managers. For example, many mods are labeled with formats like Mod-1.x to denote compatibility. If Minecraft suddenly jumps from 1.21.x to 26.1, users might assume the mod is outdated or incompatible, even if no major update breakage has occurred.
Instead of changing the version number format itself, I propose that Mojang consider using suffixes or tags to indicate update types and cycles. For instance:
-
1.x.x-gd1(Game drop)
-
1.x.x-fe1(Feature Expansion)
-
1.x.x-hf (Hotfix)
This approach keeps the well-known and stable versioning format intact while still allowing Mojang to distinguish between different update types in a clear and readable way.
Thank you for considering this suggestion. I believe it would help reduce user confusion and maintain consistency for developers, creators, and players alike.
