The ubiquity of Mending speaks to the disparity between the effort required to enchant tools, and their durability. Instead of having to repeat the cycle of RNG at the Enchantment Table for a good base, and obtain more treasure enchantments every time they break, most will see Mending as mandatory for everything to avoid all that work going to waste, and what most will do is cycle a librarian villager until the trade comes up, to use for the 23 items that can have it. A grind to avoid a bigger grind, but still a grind.
My proposed solution is that instead of making Mending books more accessible, or restricting the trade to only certain types of Villagers, I suggest we turn Mending from an enchantment, to a property of enchanting as a whole, applied to all tools that have been enchanted by default.
Tools and gear absorb XP to become enchanted with arcane magic, the life essence of this world, a glint seals all the magic inside, but as the tools become weaker with use, that glint only has energy to keep the enchantments stable, not repair the host to keep itself alive, but that can change if it absorbs more XP to keep that shine and luster, to keep the tool in good shape, like a kind of symbiosis.
Pros;
- More incentive to go for better enchantments.
- Less fear of wasting treasure enchants.
- Removed the grind and need to exploit Villager behavior.
Cons;
- Existing Mending Books will need to become regular books.
