Presently when the player levels the spear for the charge, he becomes fatigued after a few seconds and must recover the spear before then leveling again. It seems that the intention of this design is to prevent a mounted player from being an unstoppable and over-powered force, but I believe there is a better solution.
One should be able to charge spears as long as they like, particularly if preparing to receive cavalry as was the tactic used historically; if spears are to be used defensively as much as offensively, they have to be able to be charged as long as necessary.
The solution is to introduce different horse gaits: walk, trot, canter, and gallop, with the last being above the minimum speed to inflict damage, and it is a gait that a horse can only sustain for a few seconds before needing to recover its stamina. The horse controls will have to be changed for this: the horse will begin walking when the player inputs the 'forward' key, and then switch to a trot when it is pressed again, and so forth, and the horse will 'gallop' when the 'sprint' key is inputted; this will mean than horse movement works on a 'toggle' input. The 'backwards' key will be used to switch to slower gaits, with the 'left' and 'right' keys being used to steer the horse.
The new controls will also mean that the player can look independently of the horse, since the horse's rotation is no longer controlled by the player's rotation, similar to a boat.
