This idea for an unbreaking rework comes with a couple phases. First, the unbreaking enchantment would need to change from essentially adding durability to making the tools and armor it’s equipped to break similar to the elytra where it won’t erase itself. The next phase would be add a new enchantment (called something like “durability”) that actually increases the durability of whatever item it is applied to. It won’t work the way unbreaking currently does where there’s a chance that the action does not take durability, instead the durability is actually scaled up by a certain percentage as the enchantment gets higher. The final phase would be to make the new “durability” enchantment incompatible with mending. I think that this would provide more versatility to the enchantments and allow for more customization of the weapon to the need of the player.
