Vertical Mine Shaft and/or Elevator

I understand there are workarounds with soul sand and bubbles -- but I would like something more aesthetically pleasing or realistic.

My idea(s) are raw and would need some fine tuning.

What I am imagining would involve adding new blocks to the game.

These would be resource exhausting builds involving: minecart, chain, iron ingot, redstone (or redstone dust)

One thought: You could create a pully system with the Minecart with Chest, chain, and a new engine block. The engine block would be intense to craft and would active the build.

I'm imagining this build to function like a dumbwaiter for objects to go up from below, not an elevator for players to travel. I could see this being a disinteresting idea, but it fits with the theme of the game as I imagine it.

    I think it would maybe be better if you could craft a pulley-like redstone-based block that lets you interact with it with a lead or with chains to connect it to the minecart with chest or something like that
