The Savanna and its features like Termites were announced seven years ago, and although it lost the biome vote, Mojang confirmed that the update would still arrive at some point in the future.
This thread focuses specifically on Hollow Logs. The ideas presented here are inspired by Nekoma’s concepts, and I wanted to share them in a more official setting — feel free to share your thoughts and feedback!
Hollow Logs spawn naturally only in Savanna, Savanna Plateau, and Windswept Savanna biomes. They form as a result of nearby Termite Mounds, where termites feed on decomposing Acacia trees, leaving behind hollowed-out logs. While they naturally generate in Savannas, Hollow Logs can also be created manually by Silk Touching a Termite Burrow Block and placing it elsewhere in the world.
When placed in a crafting grid, a Hollow Log yields only 1 wood plank instead of the usual 4. However, the real value lies in its decorative and interactive uses. Hollow Logs can be placed sideways, mimicking fallen trees, and can hold small plants like mushrooms, moss carpets, grass, or flowers either manually or via bone meal.
Additionally, when placed upright, they can be right-clicked with most blocks to display a smaller 14x14 version of the block inside — a decorative storage feature. One practical use of this mechanic: placing farmland inside a Hollow Log protects it from being trampled by players or mobs. Water can also be stored inside Hollow Logs, functioning similarly to a Cauldron.
