This idea responds to two problems :
- Diamonds are not as precious as they were before. Since the mending enchant exists, we do not spend our diamonds so we don't really need to go mining.
- Protection and sharpness make the other enchants of their kind nearly useless.
This idea starts by introducing a new block. It could be a forge or something like that. Sharpness, protection, power and efficiency will now only be obtainable by using this new block. You can place a piece of equipment in the forge to upgrade it and get the according upgrade. It will cost the kind of material the equipment you want to upgrade is made of, and it will be more expensive with each level.
For example, to upgrade a diamond sword to sharpness 1, you will pay 3 diamonds, 5 for lv2, then 8, then 10, and finally 15. Same things for pickaxes and armors. Bows would be different, the kind of material will change for each power level (30copper-30iron-30gold-30diamond-3netherite ingots)
It will encourage players to go mining instead of making trading halls, after all, "mine" is half of the game's name, not trade. Players will now use enchants as projectile protection, smite and such because it will not conflict with the upgrade. It will surely be harder to fully upgrade a piece of equipment, but it will be more rewarding and "Minecrafty". I also think that fixing any repairing cost to 2xp levels is also needed with this idea. Lower tiers of equipments will be easier to upgrade, encouraging players to use them.
