To get sand, players usually mine for it in various biomes, which leads to world terrain destruction. Technically, sand is a renewable resource, as it can be bought from the wandering trader, but only 64 per one wandering trader.
An already existing mechanic of mud converting into clay using pointed dripstone could be used as an inspiration. For example, soul sand could be placed on top of the block that has pointed dripstone on the bottom of it. Just like with the mud, a bright cyan "droplet" will appear on the dripstone, representing a soul, and it would evaporate after falling for half a block. After some time, the soul sand would convert into a regular sand block.
This method is renewable, as soul sand is renewable via Piglin bartering farms, that utilises gold, which is a renewable resource as well. It is also a "lore friendly" solution, as it fits the Nether - Overworld contrast (maybe, the same mechanic could be applied to crying obsidian as well).
Pros of this method:
- Players can utilise an already existing mud -> clay converting farms
- Both mud and soul sand are not a full block, while a final product (clay, sand) are full blocks
- Adds more uses to soul sand and pointed dripstone
- TNT would become a renewable resource as well, as both of its components could be farmed
- Encourages use of official farms instead of exploiting bugs
This idea could be expanded further by adding ambient sounds to soul droplets, like soul sand stepping sounds, reverse sand -> soul sand mechanic, etc.
