Make weather more 'alive' by changing the amount of rain/snowfall and where

    You could also simulate the movement of storm fronts by having different biomes experience different phases of the rainstorm / snowstorm / thunderstorm. At first, only a few biomes might be getting precipitation, then later most of them are getting the worst of it, and so on. A player who wants to avoid the lightning of a really strong thunderstorm by running away to a nearby biome where the worst has already passed or not arrived yet, giving them time to find or build a shelter from the weather or the mobs that will be spawning as a result.
