TLDR for the Mojang employee who has to read all of these: Let players shear nametagged mobs to get back their nametags, keeping the name intact, with leash shearing still taking priority.
If you’re still here or the idea felt like it needed a bit more explanation, the idea is that if a mob has been given a Nametag, we (the players) could use shears on that mob to remove the Nametag and have it drop as an item, preserving the custom name.
This would provide an easy way to reuse Nametags or get them back without needing to venture out into a desert or mine, wasting resources and time just to get another one. It makes the most sense for mobs that can already be sheared, such as sheep, but the mechanic could be expanded to all mobs for consistency if Mojang so chooses (even though it would be better to have it for all by default). And if we’re looking at this from a real-world perspective, using shears or some other sharp, scissor-like object to cut off a Nametag isn’t too far off.
To avoid interfering with existing mechanics, leash removal would still take priority when using shears on a leashed mob, just like it does now.
Overall, this would offer players more flexibility when managing named mobs and help make Nametags feel like a more reusable and player-friendly resource. I’d rather not misclick and have to go find another desert temple after all.
