I worked on a progression overhaul mod a while back where I added copper gear, but I quickly realized players just skip over it. Progression in Minecraft moves too fast—iron feels like a huge upgrade, but it’s too easy to get. To fix that, I suggest “soft blocking” iron gear—requiring a smithing template (found in villages) and a primitive smithing table to craft it. This would give copper tools a real role without making iron frustrating to obtain.
The idea isn’t to restrict players harshly, but to give each tier weight and purpose. Players who want to speedrun still can, but newer players get a chance to experience the full game flow. Self-imposed limits aren’t rewarding for most; we need built-in pacing that feels natural and satisfying.
I believe Minecraft can keep its vanilla feel while reworking tools and armor from stone to netherite using soft progression—no flashy effects, just thoughtful design. I almost implemented this up to diamond tools (which became craftable only after entering the Nether), but I hit a wall due to limited coding skills. Still, I know this system can make early and mid-game gear more meaningful for all players.
