Rain hasn't really been changed for years, not including the new rain fog, but I believe it has potential to be much more immersive.
Short list of changes I would suggest:
- Rain intensities
It's weird that it immediately starts downpouring. To fix this add light rain, moderate rain, and heavy rain. This can give the player a chance to find cover!
Light rain should act as a warning incase a player has a snow golem and has forgotten to cover it.
- More clouds!
Isn't it weird that rain is falling where there aren't any clouds? It's something I notice and takes away from the immersion. To fix this, cover the skies with clouds! This can tie into rain intensities as well.
- Wind
Rain falling straight down isn't a big deal, but falling at an angle is a small detail that can make a huge impact on how immersive rain can get.
Expanding on wind in general is a really good idea. Wind can effect rain and falling leaves!
