Minecraft has received a variety of new weaponry these past few updates. Tridents, crossbows and more can now be used in combat. But of course, there could always be more ;)
The NORSE AXE would be a weapon found inside chests located in or beneath biomes themed around the cold (Extreme hills, Tundra, etc..). It can also be sold by the traveling merchant in very rare occasions (for 12-15 emeralds).
Compared to swords, the axe would deal some somewhat high-end damage (9 DMG). The weapon is a lot slower though, so the base damage output is lower compared to other high-tier weapons. What makes up for this slow DPS is AOE damage. The weapon will hit a large area in front of you (larger than other weapons), so it's ideal for crowd control.
Of course, when we talk about a new weapon, we also have to mention the enchantments. Basic enchantments would be available (Unbreaking, etc..); however, it would also come with some of its own. These would be Berserker (Lower health = higher damage. Max increase of 4 damage), Frostbite (Inflict slowness 1 when dealing damage. Timer increases with tier (3 tiers.)) and Swirl (You now hit enemies all around you).
As previously mentioned, the weapon would be ideal for crowd control, fx in the case of raids and the alike, and would as such serve a different purpose compared to other melee weapons. Also, running around with something like a Norse Axe would be awesome (Who wouldn't want to feel like a viking?).
