What is the purpose of Deepslate?

As far as I can tell, the only thing that Deepslate adds to the game is to make the drudgery of looking for diamonds significantly worse.  It takes more almost twice as much time to break, and when you are in a mixed stone/deepslate deposit, it throws your rhythm off so you have to go back and try again.  Unless I am missing something, this seems like an unnecessary and annoying addition.

    Deepslate will make more sense in 1.18, when they'll add the warden, aquifers, sculk sensors, y0 to y-64 caves, etc. It provides a block that looks similar to bedrock in some ways, but is also mine-able so players can explore. I THINK Mojang also plans a risk/reward feature, where since caves with deepslate would be more dangerous, they'd be more likely to have diamonds. Not sure about that last part though.
