This suggestion aims to fix three problems:
- Acquiring a trident isn't fun
- Ocean monuments don't have suitable rewards
- Tridents are unrepairable
Currently there's a lot of tedious grinding required to obtain a trident. You have to get lucky to find a trident drowned, and then get lucky again for it to drop a trident. When you finally get one its durability is often so low that you don't want to use it until you can enchant it with mending, or grind to get several more to repair it with. Ocean monuments give you access to sponges and a new kind of building material, but there's nothing very rewarding about conquering one, they're a letdown.
Tridents should be crafted from two new item types: 2 broken trident hafts + 3 trident tines. Broken hafts are dropped from drowned at an increased rate compared to current tridents. Whole tridents only drop extremely rarely as it's not the primary method to obtain one anymore. Each Elder Guardian has a 100% chance to drop a tine, while normal Guardians have a small drop chance to keep them renewable. They can also rarely be found in buried treasure. These pieces are used for repair, with their rarity keeping them balanced compared to the commonly suggested prismarine.
- Ocean monuments would gain an important purpose in renewable trident materials, and fits thematically as there are three elder guardians
- Increased drop chances from drowned would make hunting them feel much less tedious
- A trident would be an awesome reward from an epic quest!
