The new Mountains are incredible, and unprecedented in the terrain generation we've seen over the last 12 years. Unfortunately the Mountain is its own biome, but I thought it might be interesting to think about non-biome specific geological formations (or maybe groups specific to biome types).
So you'd see things like stone arches, escarpments or buttes in Mesas or Deserts. The Bryce Mesa is probably the closest thing to a butte in the game, but you hardly ever see them really. A Mesa sub-type that is flat like a Desert with occasional towers of terracotta would be insanely beautiful. Regular forests could see formations like the famous Tianzin Mountains in China, giant stone pillars with little flat tops with trees and grass growing on them. Sea Stacks in the oceans. Even a truly flat terrain would be much appreciated.
For players who want mountains in other biomes, there is the Inselberg/Monadnock.
Allowing for this kind of generation in the terrain will make great use of the new world height, and give an artificial appearance of "new" biomes for players to terraform to their liking. Every biome has the chance to be a truly unique and special place, as most of them will generate normally, with a small chance of generating with a unique geological feature comprised of blocks and things already in the game.
