The lighting system in Minecraft has barely changed since the game came out, and I feel as if it needs to be overhauled. The current lighting system feels incomplete and frustrating at times to work with. Illuminating large areas require several lights, and this can be a problem if you're working on a build and haphazardly placing torches other light blocks can ruin the aesthetic. One could argue that this encourages creativity, but I personally feel like it is just an irritating constraint.
One main thing that could be improved is to make lighting options on a progression scale. The light limit could be expanded to 31 or maybe 47. Earlygame light sources like torches would output the familiar level of 14, and as you progress, you get access to brighter lighting options, i.e. Redstone lamps and Glowstone could output a level of 23 or 22. Sea lanterns could produce a level of 27. End Rods would have a level of 32. And Beacons could output a level close to the maximum. This would make lighting large areas easier, as we can now cut down the number of light blocks needed.
Another system that could be added is coloured lighting. Existing blocks would be given new colours and new light blocks could be added that can be coloured with dye to produce coloured lights. This would add a new realm of possibilities for builders. As we could now use coloured lights to set up a mood or create more interest. And it would overall make the world look more vibrant.
