Leather is meant to be the first armor tier available, but it is known to be consistently more difficult to acquire than iron at the start of the game. Moreover, the new bundle is meant to be an early-game item, yet can actually be unreasonably difficult to obtain in a timely manner because of the items needed to craft it (rabbit hide, of all things).
One reason for this is that 24 leather is required to craft a set of armor, but the mobs that drop it only yield 0-2 pieces. Then there are rabbits, which only drop 0 - 1/4th of a piece of leather when you hunt them.
The simplest solution to this is as follows: Craft the item that drops from mobs into multiple leather pieces. A normal Hide item would be crafted into 4 leather pieces, and the rabbit hide would craft 1.
Leather pieces are meant for armor and bundles. Books, item frames, and other items could continue to use the (renamed) Hide as to not be made too trivial to obtain, since they are closer to mid-game items.
