Currently maps create a problem for older worlds or worlds with multiple players as they greatly increase world file size, which decreases world performance, especially on slower devices.
When a map is made, copied, generated, etc... the game creates a file for all 5 map sizes (0-4). This includes if someone makes an identical copy of a map, 5 files are created per map.
Some things that could be done to resolve this issue are the following
• Only create and keep map files for maps that are actually created or exist in the world
• when a copy of a map is made,or generally if a map is made in a location a map file already exists, reference that map data rather than generating completely new data
• Find ways to make the file size per map generated smaller
• Add more searchable information in the information listed for a map so 3rd party apps can search for and remove them more easily
A solution such as the ones above, a combination of them, or other solutions that other community members can provide would be helpful to the longevity and performance of Minecraft worlds.
Additionally, anything done to help improve this issue should have some solution for existing worlds that have an overabundance of map data to improve their performance.
